The Doctors Strike in Delhi – LIFE SAVERS: OUT OF WORK
The Doctor’s Strike in Delhi
In Delhi, more than two thousand resident doctors are on indefinite strike leading to healthcare crises in Delhi. There are about 20 hospitals including Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital whose doctors have joined the strike. This strike has lead to paralyses of healthcare facility in the national capital. Although the emergency facilities were taken care of by the senior doctors but it has adversely affected the patients who have come to hospitals for their treatment.
Doctors in Delhi are demanding better workplace security; time bound duty hours, on-time salary, safe drinking water and adequate life-saving & generic drugs. Doctors under Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) umbrella also mentioned that they had previously written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J.P.Nadda about the issue and their demands. They further added that they were forced to take such a step. Dr. Balvinder Singh, president of FORDA told in an interview that resident doctors are bthe backbone of any hospital but they were abused by the system the most. Many a times they have worked for 48 hours at a stretch without due compensation. There were only few hostels for doctors and they too lacked in basic facilities such as safe drinking water. In an interview to CNN-IBN, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said strike was not a solution to any issue, adding that he had called the doctors for talks on Sunday, but they failed to make it. The minister further said that he had still invited the striking doctors for talks. In his latest tweets Delhi’s Chief Minister Mr. Arvind Kejriwal believes that most of the demands of doctors are genuine and he has directed health department to implement them. He also added that government is committed to provide best health facilities to masses. It cannot be done without cooperation of doctors.
Delhi and many other places in our country always face difficulties of less number of doctors which in turn lead to suffering of patients and strike like this increase their difficulties. I hope the strike of doctors will end and the issue between them and the government will be resolved as soon as possible so that the patients who are facing so many problems and difficulties will be relieved.
