Self-publishing- How Amazon Traps !

by Giz TimesJune 30, 2015

How many times have we encountered a perfectly pitched page turner that we are unable to complete due to reasons that are inconsequential? To enter into the book’s world is for once and then leave not because of the untimely demise of your favorite character or the unbearable twist in the tale but because reality and life got in the way of your reading time.

So how much good is an unfinished book? “NOT much”, Amazon claims.

In a world where bookshops are unwilling to stock anything that they don’t see as dead-certified for sales, Amazon caters to the whims and wishes of new authors and provides them a platform. However according to the recent changes in its royalty policy for authors whose works are included in the Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Owner’s Lending Library,  Amazon is to pay them on the pages read in contrast to the previous basis of qualified borrows.

“We’re making this switch in response to great feedback we received from authors who asked us to better align payout with the length of books and how much customers read. Under the new payment method, you’ll be paid for each page individual customers read of your book, the first time they read It.”, Amazon said in its post.

However this is not in keeping with author’s best interest as argued by the famous sci-fi writer Ursula K. Le Guin. “It’s ideal book is a safe commodity, a commercial product written to the specifications of the current market, that will hit the BS list, get to the top, and vanish,” Le Guin wrote.

This new royalty structure will result in nothing but poorly written literature just for the sake of page turning tales that earn them money. However if you have no money for marketing and no publisher engine behind you to drive you up the high way it is difficult for you to get your work out there. But does that mean settling for less appreciation in kind for what your work truly deserves?

Amazon in its race has disregarded the interests of its writers as well as publishers and yet without it the books that require and deserve a stage would be totally lost for every agent today seems to be unwilling to test the water with the new talent.
