‘Piku’ bags Best Film Award at IFFM

The IFFM is being held from 14-27 August 2015 in Melbourne to celebrate Indian cinema and culture. Vidya Balan being the Festival Ambassador feels honoured to be IFFM’s Festival Ambassador and this role would allow her to see the way Melbourne’s Indian and non-Indian communities come together.  The guest list of IFFM is quite long which includes one of the most versatile actor  Anil Kapoor, Kannada filmmaker BS Lingadevaru, Imran Khan, Kangana Ranaut, director cum producer Nagesh Kuknoor, Sonam Kapoor, Srijit Mukherjee and amazing comedian Kiku Sharda. Apart from these the list also includes producer Elahe Hiptoola, one of the prominent designer Anamika Khanna, renowned couturier Gaurav Gupta, film critic Rajeev Masand and the woman famous as ‘lady in white ‘ in India Simi Garewal.

The event will start on August 24 with the curtain raiser with Vidya Balan announcing the dates to this year’s festival. The theme of this year’s  film festival is equality which mainly focuses on race, gender, sexuality and disability. Also, the flag hoisting ceremony took place in Federation Square as the IIFM coincides with India’s Independence Day.

IIFM Awards Night was held on Saturday, August 15. The award for best film was won by Piku whose story is based upon father-daughter relationship. Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika PAdukone starrer movie Piku who won the hearts of many people is now being applauded at the award functions. Moreover Shoojit Sarcar won the Best Director Award.

Award for best actress and actor was given to Bhumi Pednekar for Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Irrfan Khan for Piku respectively. In addition to this Kaka Muthai received the Best Indie Film Award and Best Telstra People’s Choice Award was given to Rajkumar Hirani for PK. There was also a fashion show, which showcased the collections of leading designers Gaurav Gupta, Anamika Khanna, Susan Dimasi, Roopa Pemmaraju and Richard Nylon.

There are also competitions that will be taking place one of them is WU short film competition. It provides a platform for aspiring filmmakers from India and Australia and the competition continues to grow and the quality of the films has also been improved year by year. Telstra Bollywood Dance competition and Yarra Trams competition are two others that will be a part of the IFFM.  The festival will close with the World Premier of eagerly waited Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan starrer movie  Phantom.
