New Friends Fan Theory Goes Viral
Just because Friends has been off the air for more than a decade, that does not, in any way, mean that its popularity has dropped. In fact, the show has probably received thousands of fans even after its departure. Friends is no longer just a TV show; it has become a phenomenon, and definitely the set bar for friendships all over the world. No matter the specifications, everyone related to the six main characters in one way or the other, and they could definitely see their own friendships in them.
One character that truly stood out was Phoebe Buffay, played by Lisa Kudrow. She was the representation of a lot of groups. She was funny without even knowing it, she was smart but never let it get to her head, she was weird and she took pride in it. She was the voice of every kid and adult who dared to be different and wished to make a mark of their own in the world, no matter how rough it gets. And she was never afraid of when things truly got rough.
What has been driving the Internet crazy for the past few days is the new fan theory that has gone viral. The theory continues after the official ending of the show and gives it a new ending with a very dark twist which leaves us with mixed feelings. Throughout the show, Phoebe has been seen sharing information about her problematic past with the rest of the group.
She tells how her mother was a drug dealer who later killed herself, her father was in jail, and her birth mother never bothered to look for her until Phoebe confronted her. Even though Phoebe overcomes those problems during the show and finds herself a good husband, the fan turns her life to another direction in the alternative ending.
Twitter user @strnks shared a theory of how the show should have ended in the final episode. They say: “I’d have ended Friends by revealing it was all the meth-addled fantasy of a homeless Phoebe as she stared through the window of Central Perk. Each kooky aside, each time she made everything about her, each example of how she’s an outside…it all makes sense. All 10 seasons were merely fevered imagination, projecting herself into the loves of the others. All she ever wanted was…Friends.
The final scene would be Phoebe walking away from Central Perk, with the Ross, Rachel, Joey, Chandler and Monica characters making a reference to “the crazy lady who always stares at us”. They all have different names and personalities. Phoebe walks past a furniture store and catches her reflection in a mirror. The name of the store? “Ursula”. Finally she returns to the park where she sleeps in front of the fountain. A broken lamp stands next to her bench. It starts to rain. From behind, we see her put up six dirty, but brightly coloured umbrellas. Fade to black.”
That truly is something, isn’t it?
