MTV VMA Nominees Are Out: Team Taylor Swift or Team Nicki Minaj ?

by Giz TimesJuly 23, 2015

It is that time of the year when the entire world prepares itself for MTV Video Music Awards or MTV VMA , and having years of experience, we know enough to be expecting drama. But we didn’t know that the drama is going to start already, with celebrities already standing head to head against each other. VMAs has always been controversial, whether it was Kanye West being slightly drunk and snatching Taylor Swift’s mic in the middle of her speech and announcing that Beyonce deserved it, or Miley Cyrus transforming herself to twerking on the stage with Robin Thicke.

MTV VMAs 2015 are announced and we already have been noticing quite interesting things. For starters, Cyrus will be the one hosting it, as she informed her fans via her Instagram. When the nominees for the different categories were announced this week, things got a little out of hand between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.Minaj was pretty upset that two of her biggest hits this year, including Anaconda, have not been nominated in the Video of the Year category. She took it to Twitter to voice her disappointment and anger, pointing out the very much present racism towards black female artists.

“If I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well,” she tweeted. “Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it.”

Minaj went to tweet several things, especially to take her stand on the ongoing discrimination in the music industry. Though one of her tweets hit home to Taylor Swift.

“If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year,” tweeted Minaj, and Taylor took it as a personal offence as her video Bad Blood is nominated and includes various female actors and supermodels.

“I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot,” replied Taylor. Nicki seemed taken aback from the reply as she did not mean to target her personally. “Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn’t say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this,” she wrote back.

To which Taylor replied: “If I win, please come up with me!! You’re invited to any stage I’m ever on.”

But the whole uproar did end up highlighting the point Minaj was trying to make. Media did not take more than a second to write lengthy articles about the issue, where Nicki was more or less portrayed as “angry black woman”. But thankfully, many people spoke on the issue on Twitter and came to Nicki’s defense. It was pointed out how Swift gets praised for speaking about the problems in the music industry and taking a stand for what she thinks is right, but when Minaj did so, she was cast off as hysterical. Soon the world was divided into #TeamNicki and #TeamTaylor. #TeamNicki accused Taylor of the whole “white feminism” and ignoring the issues of women of colour, whereas #TeamTaylor supported Swift saying that Nicki cannot play the race card when Beyonce was also nominated. Many boldly stated that Nicki’s video was just her twerking and did not deserve a nomination.

Thankfully, by the end, Bruno Mars, who is also nominated in the category, decided to play the class clown and cool things down. He jokingly tweeted to Ed Sheeran, a fellow nominee. “”Yo I want in on this twitter Beef!! VMAs is the new WWF!! @edsheeran F*** You!”

And surely, it was enough to bring a smile on everyone’s face.
