Meet The UPSC 2015 Topper- Ira Singhal

Differently abled people have to go the extra mile to do anything on their own. Lately, social networking sites are filled with snapshots celebrating the joy of ‘ selfie with daughter’ campaign, a new way to share and express the pride and happiness of having a gift of a daughter. India is still struggling to realize the utmost importance of the need to provide good education, free opportunities and strong support to its daughters.

Women and young girls in India have to time and again prove themselves worthy of the opportunities they should deserve naturally. The country is still progressing and girls are commendably proving people wrong with their outstanding performance in almost every field possible. Once again the country is proud to appreciate the outstanding performance brought out by women in one of the topmost civil Service exams. The result of UPSC examination came out and declared that the top four positions are all secured by women.  It’s safe to call it the year of women.

Differently-abled Singhal topped the 2014 Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination becoming a role model many. She has done her MBA from Faculty of Management Studies in Delhi and also taught Spanish and English as a tutor in Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi.

Singhal has secured the top spot, followed by Renu Raj, Nidhi Gupta and Vandana Rao. Suharsha Bhagat is the top male candidate at the fifth position in the results. A total of 1236 candidates have been successful in clearing the exam. The exams are conducted in three stages — preliminary, mains and interviews — and started on August 24 last year with 4.51 lakh candidates.

30-year-old Ira had cleared the examination in 2010  and was allotted the Indian Revenue Service but she was stopped from joining because authorities cited her “inability to push, pull and lift.” It was stated that her disability would not allow her to pick heavy packet’s. She was disappointed and couldn’t understand how her physical condition affects her quality of work.

“My physical condition has never deterred me from pursuing my dreams,” said Singhal. She won her case in 2014 and now is the first differently abled woman to top the examination.

Such a case throws light on the unfair situations faced by deserving physically challenged people who are officially and emotionally rejected. But the intense struggle and hard work committed by Ira Singhal sets a right example for many people out there. She says,” Differently abled people struggle, face difficulties everyday and have to go the extra mile to do anything on their own.”

She is currently posted in Hyderabad and is overjoyed after being able to fulfill her dream. She is just not excited but very focused and determined to utilize her energy towards the nation’s progress. Also, her position helps her to do something beneficial for physically-handicapped people.
