LK Advani on Emergency – Will History Repeat itself?

The period of 21 months between 25 June 1975 to 21 March 1977 was one of the darkest periods that our country had after independence. Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Ministers who declared “Emergency” which was officially issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352(1) of the constitution. This order of emergency resulted in the loss of elections which was held in 1977 which reduced Congress to just 153 seats and Janata Party won the elections by getting 298 seats and 47 of its allies out of 542. Morarji Desai became the first non- Congress Prime Minister. This shows that whenever a person or a party in rule tries to become more and more powerful by suspending the rights of the people then he has to face the consequences for doing this in the near future.

LK. Advani in his recent interview to the Indian express told that the forces that can crush democracy are stronger. He further added that nothing has been done that gives assurance that civil liberties will not be suspended or destroyed again. At the time when Mrs. Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister many people considered that “Indira as India, India as Indira”. Similar is the condition with Mr. Narendra Modi as the majority with which government has come into power has given lot of power to them. Some of the acts of present government like that of passing of “Land Acquisition Bill” through ordinances and banning the student organization of IIT Madras when they criticized the policies made by the government. Moreover creating barriers for NGOs to work in an easy way shows that there is a condition of informal emergency. Apart from this the division of power between the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and the Delhi government also shows dictatorship qualities.

But today due to the development of print and electronic media people are much more aware. They know Now, we can express our regret not only by carrying out rallies and procession but also through social networking sites. But if the power of government keep on increasing then the situation of Emergency may occur as this kind of situation comes slowly without any noise. It first erodes the base organizations and then leads to Emergency like situations during which there is rule by decree and civil liberties are suspended.

We should always hope for the best and be prepared for the worst. If there is a situation like that of 1975 then we should not  fear or get afraid instead we should fight for our rights.
