The star  athlete  Inderjeet Singh became the first Indian to clinch gold medal in athletics  in the World University Games by winning the men’s shot put  event  in Gwangju, Korea  on Wednesday. Indian men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol team also bagged a bronze to take India’s medal count to four (one gold, one silver, two bronze) on the fifth day of competition and is at the 25th position.Korea being at the top by winning 71 medals followed by China, Russia and Japan. The Universiade is also known as the World University Games or World Student Games is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The word Universiade is a combination of words “University” and “Olympiad”. IT is the XXVIII summer Universiade in which Inderjeet Singh has written this history.

Inderjeet was at the second spot after the fifth and penultimate throw as he had a 19.80m best throw till then before he came with 20.27m in his final attempt to win the gold medal. Previously, he had won the silver medal in the last edition, which was held in Russia. Andrei Marius Gag of Romania bagged the silver with a best throw of 19.92m while Alexander Bulanov of Russia took the bronze with 19.84m. After winning the competition,he thanked the God, his family and his coach Mr. Pritam Singh for their support. He also added that now he was looking forward to the World Athletics Championship in China next month, where he is hoping to better his personal best. Apart from this success he had also won gold medal in the Asian Grand Prix held in the year 2015 in Bangkok and Asian Championships in Wuhan in the same year.

India’s No. 1 shot putter, Inderjeet Singh, has been a true fighter in life. Given the circumstances he has faced, any other man in his place would probably have given up on sports. Even after winning the silver medal in the last edition of World University Games Inderjeet was an unknown face, but thanks to his bronze medal at Incheon Asian Games, he has grabbed quite a lot of eyeballs.  It is very to sorry to say that athletics Inderjeet Singh does not get the required recognition due to which many of the youngsters think that going into sports like athletics, hockey etc. is not a good idea. Hence, we lack good sportsmen. Apart from cricket and now shooting, tennis and badminton,no other sport is popular in our country. Also, not enough facilities are provided to these sports persons so that they can practice hard and give their best in order to bring our country to the top of medals tally.

It is high time that government should look upon this issue and take some steps in order to improve the condition of sports person like Inderjeet Singh. Giving prize money after they win an event is not enough, helping them and providing them good facilities during their training period is what they want. Apart from the steps the government should take, we as a responsible person and as a good human we should also appreciate their effort and encourage people like Inderjeet Singh so that they can do much better in the future.
