Who can ever forget the super-sensation that was Amy Winehouse? Her journey to fame and stardom was quick and within a short period of time, she gathered herself many beloved and dedicated fans. Which is why her death shocked the entire world. But the actual truth about the jazz singer is finally revealed in a new documentary Amy which tells the story of her rise and fall.

The documentary by the filmmaker Asif Kapadia was recently released. He uses various homemade videos by Winehouse’s friends, family, producers, concerts, interviews and recording sessions to tell the tale of the singer. He uses plenty of unseen footage which shows a new side of her and uses the seen footage and places it in a new light. The documentary starts with a video of Winehouse, 14 at that time, singing the happy birthday song to a friend. Even at such a young age it can be seen that she had a velvety and experienced voice which sounded like magic to the ears of the listener. It also shows the side of the young singer who confesses to her friends that she can never imagine being famous.

“I don’t think I’m gonna be at all famous,” she says. “I don’t think I can handle it. I would probably go mad, you know what I mean? I would go mad.”

The documentary shows her struggle from the starting, when she was an inexperienced newbie who was ready for every challenge and just wanted to make a mark for herself. Her journey is shown, ultimately ending in 2011 when she died of an alcohol overdose. A plus point for the documentary is how the filmmaker does not try to analyze the situation and provide his own interpretation; rather he simply lays all the facts in front of the viewers and lets the story tell itself.

The documentary portrays a true side of Winehouse, where she is struggling with her inner demons but at the same time is using her emotions and her struggles as a fuel to her music which makes it even more heartfelt and strong. It also shows her relationship with her husband Blake Fielder who was one of the biggest reasons for her drug and alcohol addiction. The film shows how her love for particular things turned harmful and ended up destroying her.

The industry and Winehouse’s relatives may have mixed feelings about the documentary but at least it has graced the fans with the singer’s presence once again, giving them a closure they needed.

I have always been that girl in the corner with glasses dangling between my ears and my nose buried deep in a book. 20 year old English Literature major, and I absolutely love reading books, watching TV shows and movies that mentally torture me and keeps me up all night crying over the characters that do not exist. And just like everybody else, I enjoy a good cup of coffee and the pleasure of listening to good music.
